5-25-22 republicans at state convention approve resolution calling for hand-county election ballots

The executive director of the government watchdog group Common Cause in Wisconsin says a proposal by some Republicans to have all ballots be hand-counted on election day would be a mistake.    Republicans approved a resolution requiring hand-counting of ballots at their state convention over the weekend.  Six states have already introduced legislation to require hand-counting ballots.  Common Cause in Wisconsin director Jay Heck says hand counting ballots would mean the final results would not be known on election night and there would be more errors.  Fond du Lac County Clerk Lisa Freiberg says hand-counting is a bad idea, and says its less accurate than the electronic machines.  “Me being a candidate which I am every four years, if we count by hand I will never ever trust that is the accurate count for my contest,”  Freiberg told WFDL news.  “I will trust those machines.”  The push for hand-counting ballots comes amid mistrust of elections among many Republicans who believe the false narrative that widespread fraud cost president Donald Trump reelection in the 2020 presidential election.  Despite no evidence of widespread fraud or major irregularities, conspiracy theories have proliferated among his allies that voting systems were somehow manipulated to favor Democrat Joe Biden.
