8-31-22 league of women voters of wi pleased with judge ruling on absentee ballots for disabled voters

A federal judge in Wisconsin is expected to rule later this week to allow voters with disabilities to receive assistance when returning their ballots this fall.  Judge James Peterson said he will issue the ruling that cites federal protections under the  Voting Rights Act for disabled voters to receive assistance.  Executive director of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin Debra Cronmiller:  “I’m so excited,”  Cronmiller told WFDL news.   “This is a wonderful indication the federal law does protect voters with disabilities,”    The judge said under current law, every option for voters who cannot return their own ballot  “would result in some sort of injury.”
