1-22-20 waupun sewer rates

The Waupun Utilities general manager says upgrades to the city’s wastewater treatment system will help the city meet more than just new DNR-madated phosphorous requirements.   Randy Postuma tells WFDL news the city will be implementing what’s  called an advanced biological nutrient recovery or ABNR system.  Postuma says the concern is that phosphorous causes algae blooms in waterways, specifically in this case, the Rock River.  Postuma says the good news is the ABNR system will also be able to take care of nitrogen which will also face tougher EPA regulations in the near  future.  The city is paying for the necessary equipment upgrades with significant increased sewer rates that go into effect in April.   The average residential customer will pay an extra  19 dollars a year over the next four years.
