8-16-19 congregation of sisters of st. agnes issues statement on gun violence

The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Agnes is calling for sensible gun legislation n the wake of the most recent mass shootings across the country.  Two mass shootings this month in the span of 14 hours in El Paso, Texas, and then in Dayton, Ohio, left more than 30 people dead.  Sister Ruth Battaglia says the congregation will not accept mass shooting as the new normal and join the many voices demanding sensible legislation that works for the good of all people, not for the powerful few.  “Its always a shock.  It always feels devastating that innocent people’s lives are taken away,”  Battaglia told WFDL news.  The congregation says it demands a ban on the sale of high capacity weapons and magazines, universal background checks and mandatory waiting periods to purchase firearms.   Sister Ruth says the congregation condemns the hate-filled rhetoric and racist ideologies that fuel violence.  Unfortunately, Sister Ruth says she is not confident that any meaningful change will occur  anytime soon.
