6-26-19 school milk nutrition act of 2019

The Fond du Lac County Dairy and Livestock extension agent says she supports the School Nutrition Act of 2019.  The bipartisan legislation would expand milk options for students and is designed to reverse the decline of milk consumption in schools.  Fond du Lac County Dairy extension agent Tina Coleman says the legislation comes as schools are serving fewer half pints of milk, even though school enrollmment was growing.  In November 2017, the U.S. Department of Agriculture included a provision in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs, that provides schools with the option to serve low-fat, one-percent flavored milk.  The School Milk Nutrition Act of 2019 will codify this provision and maintain that option if its consistent with the most recent dietary guidelines for Americans.
