A Republican member of the legislature’s budget writing committee says he doesn’t believe Republican members on the committee will support a compromise on Medicaid expansion in the budget. Republicans voted Thursday to kill the cornerstone of Democratic governor Tony Evers’ two year budget proposal. It could be added back later or passed as separate legislation, but state representative Mark Born of Beaver Dam says he doesn’t see that happening. “Its pretty clear there are two strong differences of opinion on that and I’m certainly part of the group that thinks that we should not be trying to greatly expand our welfare programs in Wisconsin,” Born told AM 1170s Between the Lines program. Other proposals removed from the budget include increasing the minimum wage, legalizing medical marijuana and all-but ending a manufacturing tax break program.
