4-4-17 uw finances

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A new report shows the University of Wisconsin System’s net worth dropped in the last fiscal year for the first time since 2002.  The system released a financial report Monday for the year that ended June 30, 2016. The report showed the system’s net worth fell $110.2 million, from roughly $6.7 billion in fiscal year 2015 to about $6.6 billion.  The report noted a $220 million liability in the system’s pension fund due to less-than-anticipated investment earnings. State aid also dropped by nearly $94 million dollars as the system absorbed its share of a $250 million cut in Gov. Scott Walker’s 2015-17 state budget.  The system generated $1.23 billion in student tuition and fees compared with $1.17 billion in 2015. The fall 2016 preliminary student headcount dropped by 3,277.
